Awesome Albums You Should Probably Listen To: Yyrkoon - Unhealthy Opera

Some Guy has returned with yet another Awesome Album You Should Probably Listen To! I decided that this blog is far too pretty to not be posted on every day, so I’m going to try to do more stuff on here. I have no life, so expect lots of activity here over the next few days.

The amazing album I’ve got for you today comes all the way from that strange land of France. Yyrkoon (Pronounced “ear-koon”) combines technical yet melodic metal with some of the sexiest growling I’ve ever heard. The album I’m suggesting that is awesome and you should listen to is known as Unhealthy Opera. I assure you however that this album is perfectly healthy to listen to, I’m sure they just thought that was a cool name or something. Stupid jokes aside, this album is full of incredible riffs. I’d say they are some of the most amazing riffs in all of death metal. Another unusual thing about this band is the lyrics are actually pretty cool. Instead of the usual crap of sodomizing people with rakes and cannibalism, we get stuff about occultism, horror / fantasy and even the band member’s personal beliefs about stuff. As an added bonus you can actually understand them! I’ve never understood why some death metal bands insist on being so brutal you can’t understand the lyrics. I guess it’s kind of a good thing because most metal (especially that of the death variety) does in fact have awful lyrics, but whatever. Check it out, whoever might be reading this.

Maybeshewill - Sing the Word Hope In Four-Part Harmony

Some Guy is back with another review! To celebrate our spiffy new template and wonderful logo that I drew in MS Paint all by myself, I’ve got quite a present for you today! This is simply an amazing year for post rock and well, I’m honestly quite shocked at the quality of some of the releases. Here’s another one that just came out of nowhere!

Maybeshewill is a British band with 3 dudes and a pretty girl. Pretty girls make every band better, and this one is certainly no exception. Before this new album of theirs came out, all I had heard from these guys in their Japanese Spy Transcript EP, which was awesome. But this new album, Sing the Word Hope In Four-Part Harmony, is 100% pure omgsogood. Yes, I did just make that word up just for the occasion. Do you like it? Anyways, this is the heavier variety of post rock. It’s not the oh let’s see if anything interesting ever happens… *20 minutes later* WHAT DO YOU MEAN THE SONG IS OVER?! kind. Bands like this make Godspeed You! Black Emperor cry because they will never be this good. You hear that Godspeed? You will never be this good, stop trying. From the second this album starts to the moment it ends, it will leave you screaming NEED MOAR and frequently using all caps to describe how good it is. Enjoy!

Awesome Albums You Should Probably Listen To: Why? - Alopecia

Some Guy is here with the first in his series of “Awesome Albums You Should Probably Listen To!” I feel the need to highlight certain albums that I for whatever reason think you should listen to and deserve more than just a little spot on the musical recommendation thing I posted awhile ago. I’ll get to the point here.

The first of the Amazing Albums You Should Probably Listen To is Why? – Alopecia. This album was recommended to me by a guy on last.fm and for this I am eternally grateful. This is the most magical thing I’ve ever heard of. Normally I’d have thought that a combination of hip hop and indie rock would be the most awful idea imaginable. However, here it’s so good it hurts. The lyrics are probably the most interesting aspect. How can you not love a band that works in lyrics like “In Berlin I saw two men fuck in the dark corner of a basketball court.” That’s amazing on every level! Download this shit right now.

Irepress - Sol Eye Sea I

It appears my last review was deleted, so hopefully this one won’t be. Some Guy returns with an interesting album that you will most certainly love. And if you don’t, well you probably have bad taste in music and therefore your opinions do not matter to me.

From the second you turn on Irepress’ recently released “Sol Eye Sea I”, your face is instantly melted with post-metal awesomeness. It goes on to melt your face with post- rock awesome as well. Irepress transitions between the two quite smoothly. The vocals are practically nonexistent, however. The music is just so interesting I found myself ignoring them entirely. From the dreamy guitar work to the great bass, this album is musically solid! In fact, this album is so good I can’t even come up with a pretentious analogy to describe how amazing it is. It’s just that fucking good.

I would say that this is probably my favorite album by these guys and one of my favorites of 2009 so far. Top notch post-metal right here everybody, download this and enjoy!

The Gathering - The West Pole

So I finally get to review the new The Gathering album, “The West Pole”. I, the magnificent Some Guy, have been waiting for this one for awhile. And honestly I was afraid that it was going to suck. The Gathering started off as a death doom band but they sucked so they hired the pretty Anneke van Giersbergen so they can be one of those female fronted symphonic metal bands. Now they play atmospheric rock.

This album is indeed a pleasant surprise. I thought it was going to be terrible because Anneke van Giersbergen left to form her own band. Her replacement, Silje Wergeland is a good enough singer but isn’t nearly as hot. The best part of the West Pole is that it takes all of the good parts from previous albums “Home” and “Souvenirs” to create something that’s musically more interesting than both of them. The album is mellow enough to go to sleep to yet not boring so listening while you’re awake is also nice. I’ve heard a bunch of Anneke fanboys complaining about how the band is nothing without her and how much this album sucks, but they’re morons. This album is quite good, check it out!

Mono - Hymn to the Immortal Wind

Some Guy is back with another review! The album I get to blabber on about for a few paragraphs is Mono’s recently released “Hymn to the Immortal Wind”. It’s another one that comes from that one journal I posted on last.fm requesting people to recommend me music. And here we go!

Mono is the kind of post rock to sleep to. It’s soft, relaxing, and unlike much of my musical collection doesn’t scare people who may wander into my room while I’m listening to it. It’s so relaxing and peaceful that this album does in fact have a permanent place on my sleep playlist. I don’t think that this is gonna do much for people who don’t already love post rock. If you hate the genre this certainly isn’t going to convince you that it’s not a terrible genre, however fans will be pleased.

Kylesa - Static Tensions

For my next review, I, the magnificent Some Guy, shall be informing you of the wonders of Kylesa’s new album, Static Tensions. This band was recently recommended to me in a journal I wrote on last.fm about people recommending me music. I gave it a listen, noticing that it was a 2009 album so that means I should review it here!

I don’t know what exactly I would call Kylesa. According to their Last.fm tags they’re sludge, hardcore, and crust. So I guess that works for me. It doesn’t really matter what genre it is anyways. I found this album to be quite enjoyable. The music and lyrics blend nicely, the sludgy guitar is always interesting, and of course there’s my favorite part, the drums. Apparently this band uses two drummers. Two drummers are certainly more fun than one. Oh and two vocalists as well.

This album is like sipping on a can of Cherry Coke with a pretty girl in your arms on warm spring afternoon. Pretentious analogies aside, I’m quite certain that any fan of sludge or hardcore will enjoy this album as much as I did.
